Being on the team for the Kickstarter of Clara Ward’s Be the Sea: Audiobook and Hardcover Editions, I posted a brand new Sea Creature of the Day artpiece every day during the whole campaign from June 14 until July 9, 2024. Here you can find all of the creatures.
If you’d like to read a queer, neurodivergent science fantasy novel centred around the ocean, either in ebook, paperback, hardcover, or audiobook format, consider getting a copy of Be the Sea. You can also still read the updates of the Kickstarter, including a tour around an aquarium, a look behind the scenes of Matthew Spencer’s artwork, tasty recipes, and a chocolate & bookshop trip.
8 of these Sea Creatures will be made into postcards as rewards of the Kickstarter! Vote for your 8 favourite Sea Creatures in the poll at the bottom of this page and help us decide which ones will become a postcard.
If you missed the Be the Sea Kickstarter, you can add a pack of Sea Creature postcards to your order here as long as preorders are open!
Be the Sea: Audiobook and Hardcover – a Kickstarter Project We Love. Cover by Matthew Spencer.
Day 1: Crochet Manta Ray – clearly it’s up to no good!
Day 2: Only lines, and yet a whole tuna!
Day 3: This origami crab keeps an eye on things.
Day 4: A Floral Seahorse.
Day 5: A very adventurous non-binary jellyfish.
Day 6: From the darkness, a rainbow rises… Wait, it’s just our newest tentacle friend!
Day 7: Most green sea turtles aren’t exactly green, but this one is, and it dreams of making a trip on a sailboat.
Day 8: Skeleton shrimp play an important role in both BE THE SEA and the related short story DREAM THE SEA (Small Wonders, 2024). To be fair, this shrimp looks more like a ghost shrimp, but no matter what its exact species is, it’s definitely a diva!
Day 8 (bis): The crocheted shrimp seen from the side for better contrast.
Day 9: This very decorative urchin has been found to reduce stress. Try it yourself; aggressively drawing that many lines will have you coming out fresh on the other side.
Day 10: The Double Chocolate Cookie Fish. No matter how much research Wend has been doing, this one remains their favourite.
Day 11: Rainbow Tardigrade wishes you a happy Pride Month!
Day 12: Origami Whale – just chilling.
Day 13: This Floral Starfish loves to use new skills (and so does its creator).
Day 14: An angelfish floating across the galaxy.
Day 15: Another rainbow octopus unfurls from the depths.
Day 15: Another rainbow octopus, resting on top of Manta.
Day 16: Dites-moi, bernard-l’hermite.
Day 17: Even rotifers have dreams. This one wants to be a ballerina (or possibly Betty Boop).
Day 18: Steve the Lagoon Triggerfish says hi and recommends Clara Ward’s colourful writing!
Day 19: The Sea Creature of the Day felt a little lonely…so it brought a friend!
Day 20: This Triangle Sea Cucumber brings awesome news! We reached the first stretch goals, so at least 4 Sea Creature postcards will definitely be made!
Day 21: A crocheted Ace Sea Snake who loves to play games!
Day 22: Only flowers (and a background), and yet a whole spotted moray.
Day 22: Only flowers, and yet a whole spotted moray.
Day 23: This Origami Sea Snail can’t reach the next stretch goal fast enough!
Day 24: The coolest sea anemone wants to remind you that you have 60 hours left to back the BE THE SEA Kickstarter!
Day 25: Even in the deepest depths of the ocean, the spiders whisper to make everyone’s stories be heard all around the world.
Day 26: The Dragon at the Bottom of the Sea.
Day 26: The Dragon at the Bottom of the Sea.
Day 26: The Dragon at the Bottom of the Sea, reading about herself
Bonus: Reenacting the Alia Terra scene with friends
