Be the Sea and Meet a New Sea Creature Every Day

Hi!

Be the Sea is a science fantasy novel written by my friend Clara Ward, and—like my own novella The Dragon of Ynys—published by Atthis Arts. I was a proofreader for Be the Sea, but most of you will know that I write honest reviews, and that not every book I proofread gets five out of five stars. This one did!

Here is my review as originally posted on The Storygraph and Goodreads, in October 2023:

“Be the Sea is a near-future solarpunk science fiction/magical realism book that is definitely worth taking your time for. The gentle atmosphere ebbs and flows like the ocean, introducing new characters on your path, most of whom I found very loveable.

“The story is told in three acts: first you sail across the ocean with a small cast of characters, experiencing an adventure on the sea and listening to the characters’ stories and memories whenever nature allows such peaceful luxuries. Once on land in act 2, the story unfolds into something larger, with more characters, more intrigue, and higher tension.

“The reader gets to follow the characters and conversations so closely that it feels to me as if the story has actually taken me on a holiday to Hawaiʻi. I felt the water, smelled the scents of all the delicious food, enjoyed visiting an extraordinarily pretty mall. In Wend, the main character, I found one of the most relatable characters I’ve ever seen. Be the Sea contains an amazing amount of representation for queer and neurodiverse characters all around. But while I love Wend and find them so very relatable, I must admit my favourite character was Aljon, the asexual cook and local ray of sunshine.

“Throughout everything that happens, the theme that stood out most to me was the power of working together—even when interactions with other people can be challenging and confusing. Everything in the narrative is treated with kindness, including the difficult subjects that come up. (A list of content warnings can be found via https://www.atthisarts.com/content/

“If you enjoy learning (or already knowing things) about biology, the environment and technologies that could help protect it, the memories and dreams that shape someone, or simply need to be reminded of how the traces we leave in the lives of others can make a huge difference (something we all may need to hear whenever we feel insecure), this is the book for you. Biology nerds will be particularly delighted.

“In the acknowledgements, I learned that the author’s royalties for this book will be donated to Conservation International, an organisation protecting the ocean. This fits the book and the characters’ ethics so well that I feel like it deserves a separate shout-out.”

Now let’s return to the present (free time travel!):

Today marks the launch of a Kickstarter campaign to make Be the Sea accessible as audiobook and hardcover editions. I’m part of the marketing team of this campaign and we have some really fun things planned—for example, I’ll be posting a Sea Creature of the Day over on Instagram every day! The first one is up right now. There will also be lots of cool updates from author Clara Ward on the Kickstarter page itself!

I really feel it’s important that stories like Be the Sea, which has a non-binary, neurodivergent main character along with a cast of queer and neurodivergent characters, become widely accessible. You all know I’m very fond of Atthis Arts as an independent publisher who allows our voices to be heard—and the audiobook starts from $1 thanks to the “pay what you can” setup. Aside from the audiobook, paperback, and hardcover, you can also grab an Atthis Arts book bundle (which includes my own The Dragon of Ynys as well as other great titles!), AND there’s an extra special Numbered-Edition Hardcover Edition hand-coloured by illustrator Matthew Spencer! Don’t miss it!

Be kind to our oceans!

Rise, the dragon of ynys

Rise has risen!

The Rise anthology came out yesterday!

Cover of Rise: Queer Sci Fi's Tenth Annual Flash Fiction Contest

This anthology is packed with 120 stories under 300 words each, all with a speculative element and queer characters. One of these stories is my little piece “Ace-tral Projection”, and the book also includes L.S. Reinholt’s “Flood”.

You can buy the book in ebook, paperback, AND hardcover format. Find all the info and buy links via the publisher’s website, and add the book on Goodreads here.

The winners of this edition were Aidee Ladnier’s “Getting The Proper Rise” in third place, Sorren Briarwood’s “Dead Name” in second place, and Meghan Hyland’s “So High Up We’ll Never Hear Them Shouting” in first place. Congratulations!

The winner announcement can be found here, judge’s picks were announced here, honorable mentions were announced here, and the full list of stories in the book is on this page.

And we’ll continue celebrating today, because I have great news for everyone in Belgium who wants to buy The Dragon of Ynys at an independent bookshop: it is now available at Boekhandel Grim in Hasselt!

Happy autumn, and happy Ace Week!

P.S. My postcard sets are still available! Read about them here.

Paranatellonta, Rise

Flash Fiction: Rise!

Hi!

It’s that time of the year when the stories are being announced that will be part of the Queer Sci Fi Flash Fiction Contest anthology. The theme this year was “Rise”, once again prompting authors to write a story of 300 words, and I’m proud to say I submitted a story called “Ace-tral Projection” and it was selected. This is the fifth year in a row I have a story in the contest anthology! Everyone who’s friends with me on Duolingo knows I do love a good long streak.

You can read the full list of anthology picks via this link – and you may notice that my friend and co-writer LS Reinholt’s story “Flood” made it in there too! *high fives*

In other news, Fie and I posted the 359th edition of Paranatellonta yesterday—remember there’s a new post on the 1st and 15th of every month. Our next edition, on August 15, will be very special, and not just because 360 is a nice round number—we will celebrate that Paranatellonta will have existed for 10 years!!! Keep your eyes peeled. In the meantime, you can go read the latest editions via the main page (click on the “[time] ago and x notes” line under a post to enlarge both its photo and text, or click the “Random post” button at the top to be catapulted up to ten years back in time). As ever, everything Paranatellonta is free to read. Enjoy!

Love from rainy Germany, where I’ve been having a very cosy autumnish holiday in the middle of summer (but also some sunny hobbit adventures on mountains),

A Bookstr Interview and Lots of Art

Wow, have I really not written any blog posts since February? Oops…

Well, hello! Time sure is flying, and lots of things are in the works, though none of them have come to the point of any Big Announcements yet. If anyone is making lists of skills writers need, don’t forget to add “having patience”.

I’m writing to you today because I gave an interview! Book website Bookstr asked me and 4 other asexual authors all the same five questions about the reasons why we write and our experiences, and I found it very interesting to read the answers of the others as well. You can read the full interview via this link. Enjoy!

I also wanted to tell you that I participated in Workshop Week last week and made quite a lot of art! You can see all the results on my Instagram; I learned new techniques for handlettering, watercolour painting, portraiture, and sketching flowers, and had a lot of fun with all that! I’ve already been applying what I learned to some new cards today.

Tonight I participated in the end-of-schoolyear performance of my spoken-word Storytelling class, and I’m very happy with how it went. I can feel how much I learned and improved since we started last September, and can’t wait to see how our skills will evolve as the class continues. Even in my writing, I can feel its influence.

I hope to be back soon with some publishing news. Fingers crossed!

Love,

Minerva

Pride Month Instagram Interview

Hello everyone, and happy Pride Month!

It’s been a while since you heard from me on this blog, and a lot has changed: I moved house and stopped working as a pharmacist. It’s time to properly dive into writing and creating again!

And although, if you’re watching the news, the world isn’t making it easy to feel celebratory this month, we all do our best to find safety and joy.

Natasha aka @bibliophile.nat was so kind as to publish an interview about The Dragon of Ynys, being an author, and being queer: you can read it here! (Note that it continues in the comments below the post, due to Instagram’s character limit.) Thank you so much for having me, Natasha.

And while we’re celebrating, I’d also like to do a shout-out to my good friend and editor E.D.E. Bell: eir book Just Bart (which I recommend wholeheartedly to everyone looking for a kind, funny read) just won a Midwest Book Award!!! Congratulations, Emily!

One more thing while I’m here: everyone interested in a gritty fantasy trilogy and/or a TTRPG in the same universe should go have a look at the Grayshade Kickstarter. This is a collaboration between Alligator Alley Entertainment and Atthis Arts – so you know it’ll be good.

Talk to you soon!

Love,

Minerva

The Dragon of Ynys available via Audible!

The Dragon of Ynys audiobook cover

The story has been entered into the webs! You can get it on Audible via this link, or if you already have the Audible app, simply entering “The Dragon of Ynys” in its search bar should lead right to it.

If you were a Kickstarter backer, you should have received it in your emails last Sunday (Feb 6). And if you’re a Kickstarter backer who uses Audible and wants to be able to listen to it there, too, you should keep an eye on the emails with Kickstarter updates, where Chris will explain how that works.

Enjoy listening and have a great weekend!

The audiobook is finished!

First of all…

Happy New Year!

Handdrawn New Year's Card

January was over before I knew it, so I know my wishes are rather late, but I do wish you the very best for 2022!

And this way, I can start a new blogging year with extremely exciting news… The audiobook for The Dragon of Ynys is finished!!! It sounds amazing and I can’t wait for everyone to discover the amazing voices Ryan H. Reid created for Violet, Snap, and all their friends!

Kickstarter backers will have received an email with a link to the audio files by now. (Enjoy!!! And if you’d like to leave a review, which is always super helpful – the audiobook edition is up on The StoryGraph and will be added to Goodreads as well once it is released on Audible. For now, this is the Goodreads link for the ebook version – I’ll share the specific one for the audiobook edition in my next post, or you can look for it by hovering over the cover and clicking “other editions”.)

If you weren’t able to acquire it via Kickstarter, the audiobook will be on Audible soon. They are currently checking the files, which can take up to 2 weeks, so we expect it to be up there before the end of the month. Of course I’ll make a new post here to alert you all when that happens!

In other news, Dragon editor E.D.E. Bell will have a new book out soon with magic and dragons and queer characters. You can preorder Night Ivy here!

And my other dragon sibling, friend Ava Kelly, is looking forward to the release of their book of fairy tales which is SO beautifully illustrated by Matthew Spencer: Alia Terra: Stories from the Dragon Realm. It will be out on March 1, with sales info coming soon, and can be added to your Goodreads or The StoryGraph shelves.

Now I’ll let you go to listen to the audiobook! This is really a Thing That Exists now! Aaaaah!!

Love,

Minerva

I’ll keep you all updated here on the progress, of course. For now, you can read the newest update on the project here, from Atthis Arts.

Thank you and have a wonderful day! I hope you can feel our celebratory vibes all over the world.

How It Started

With almost $3000 on the counter (which would be a magical number to push us forward in the algorithms and general perception!), we’ve got a new update from narrator Ryan H. Reid where he is getting started on the audiobook. Ever wondered what the absolute essentials are to create an audiobook? Discover it in the new video!

At the time I write this, there are 64 hours left to preorder your The Dragon of Ynys audiobook on a “pay what you can” basis, starting from $1. And yes, offering just $1 is absolutely a legit option that helps us forward! We can’t express our thanks enough to everyone who is making this project possible and who helps us move towards the best possible quality.

The Countdown Dragons (or afteldraakjes) have all gotten their own micro-poem by E.D.E. Bell – you can see the whole thread of dragon drawings and poetry here on Twitter.

This was the latest little dragon, with 3 days to go:

Dragon Three

If you want to know what the Dragon of Two will look like, check the thread or my Instagram this evening (European time). Feel free to show them, and of course our Kickstarter, to all your friends!

Wishing you a very nice day with delicious tea (if you like tea),
